Cameron Art Museum

For a city with as much history as Wilmington, it’s easy to forget it also has a serious art scene — and the Cameron Art Museum is the heart of it. Known locally as CAM, this is one of coastal North Carolina’s premier art institutions: a striking modern building, a deep permanent collection, an ambitious rotating exhibition schedule, and a meaningful piece of Civil War history right on its grounds. Be sure to check out the YouTube video and pictures below to get a feel for the museum before you go — or to relive the visit after.

One of the Coast’s Premier Collections

Founded in 1962, CAM has spent more than half a century building one of the finest art collections in the region. While the museum honors every medium, its greatest strength has long been works on paper — and its permanent collection pairs the creative legacy of Eastern North Carolina with significant national and international names.

That range is what makes it special. A walk through the galleries can put regional artists like Minnie Evans, Claude Howell, and Maud Gatewood alongside internationally recognized figures like Mary Cassatt, Romare Bearden, Salvador Dalí, Judy Chicago, and Kara Walker. It’s a collection that, in the museum’s own words, situates North Carolina in a global context — homegrown talent given its rightful place on the world stage.

Always Something New

CAM is anything but static. The museum runs a busy schedule of rotating exhibitions throughout the year, and for a lot of regular visitors, that’s the real draw — there’s almost always a reason to come back. The curatorial team has a reputation for crafting exhibitions that feel like carefully constructed conversations rather than just walls of pretty pictures, often exploring timely themes, historical connections, and groundbreaking artistic movements. Past shows have ranged from immersive contemporary installations to borrowed historical collections chronicling coastal life.

More Than a Museum

Part of what makes CAM stand out is what surrounds it. The museum sits on a wooded park property that is also a historic Civil War site — the location of the Battle of Forks Road — and includes meaningful outdoor sculpture, most notably Boundless, a moving monument honoring the United States Colored Troops who fought here. Walking trails wind through the grounds, making the visit as much an outdoor experience as an indoor one.

Inside, the museum is also a genuine community hub, with an active education center offering art classes and workshops for kids and adults, plus regular cultural programs, performances, and events throughout the year.

Good to Know

  • Location: 3201 South 17th Street, Wilmington, near the intersection of 17th Street and Independence Boulevard — easy to reach and distinguished by its modern architecture.
  • Plan ahead: Exhibitions rotate regularly and hours can change, so always check the official website (cameronartmuseum.org) before your visit to see what’s currently on view.
  • Give yourself time: Between the galleries, the grounds, and the historic site, it’s worth budgeting a couple of hours.
  • Don’t skip outside: The park property, walking trails, and the Boundless monument are an essential part of the experience — not just an afterthought.

Worth a Visit

Whether you’re a dedicated art lover or just someone who appreciates a thoughtful, beautifully curated space, CAM offers something Wilmington’s historic sites can’t. It’s contemplative, it’s always changing, and it carries real weight — both artistically and historically. Of all the places to spend a quiet couple of hours in Wilmington, this is one we genuinely look forward to returning to.
