Some breweries are about the building. Some are about the beer. DrumTrout Brewing Company is about the vibe — that easy, salt-air, coastal-Carolina feel of a place built by people who clearly spend a lot of time on the water. Tucked into a Pine Valley strip center about halfway between downtown Wilmington and Carolina Beach, this family-owned neighborhood brewery has become a genuine local favorite — the kind of place where the regulars know each other’s names, the beer is well-crafted, and the patio is perfect on a summer afternoon. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.
A Brewery Born on the Water
DrumTrout’s story is one of our favorites in Wilmington. Years ago, when owner Joe was still homebrewing beer on the porch of his and his wife’s surf shack on the south end of Wrightsville Beach, he bought a small skiff and named it “DrumTrout.” That little boat became the family’s vessel of choice — for fishing, surfing, camping, and a lot of life lived on the coast. When the time came to open a brewery in Wilmington, they wanted it to reflect that love of the water — and naming it after their first boat felt like the most natural thing in the world.
That coastal-Carolina spirit runs through everything DrumTrout does. The brewery’s identity is rooted in life on the Carolina coast, from the way it’s designed to the small-batch, evolving approach to brewing.
The Beer
DrumTrout brews on a five-barrel brewhouse (recently upgraded from their original three-barrel setup), which means small, hands-on batches that allow for a constantly evolving and experimental beer list. The 12 rotating taps usually feature a solid mix of their own brews plus the occasional guest tap from other local breweries — so even regulars have a reason to keep coming back.
The lineup leans into the styles that drink best in coastal Carolina weather — crisp lagers, well-balanced IPAs, easy-drinking ales, and a rotating cast of seasonals. The brewery has built a particularly solid reputation for its IPAs, but the variety means there’s almost always something on tap that fits whatever mood you walked in with.
For non-beer drinkers, DrumTrout also pours wine, seltzer, cider, and kombucha — so there’s something for just about everyone in your group.
The Space
DrumTrout’s taproom is on the smaller side, but it’s been carefully designed to feel inviting. Beautiful teal-painted floors give the room the feel of walking on water, natural wood elements give it warmth, and the five-barrel brewhouse is right on display so you can see where the magic happens.
Where DrumTrout really stands out, though, is the outdoor patio. Picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, outdoor heaters, and fire pits make it comfortable across all four seasons. It’s a great spot for an easy afternoon beer, weekend trivia, live music, or just hanging out with friends and a furry friend or two.
Good to Know
- Family- and pet-friendly: Kids and well-behaved dogs are both genuinely welcome.
- Outdoor space: The patio is one of the most enjoyable in town and stays comfortable year-round thanks to heaters and fire pits.
- Food trucks and BYOF (bring your own food) are both common — DrumTrout doesn’t have a kitchen, but nearby places like Slice of Life pizza and Primos cheesesteaks (in the same strip mall) are popular pairings.
- Events: Live music, trivia nights, and community events are a regular part of the schedule, so check ahead if you want to plan around them.
- Cozy indoor space: The taproom can fill up fast — visiting during off-peak hours is a good idea if you want a quieter table.
A Wilmington Local Favorite
DrumTrout Brewing Company is the kind of place that grows on you. The beer is genuinely good, the people are genuinely kind, and the whole place feels exactly like what a neighborhood brewery should be — relaxed, welcoming, and built around the things that make coastal Carolina life so easy to love. If you’re putting together a Wilmington brewery day, it’s well worth a stop.
