Flytrap Brewing

Some breweries chase the next big thing. Flytrap Brewing takes a quieter approach — small-batch, hand-crafted ales, brewed by people who care about the craft and the community in equal measure. Tucked into the Brooklyn Arts District just a few blocks from the Wilmington riverfront, this neighborhood brewery has been a beloved downtown gathering spot since 2014, and a genuine reflection of what makes Wilmington’s beer scene so special. Be sure to check out the pictures below to get a feel for the place before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Brewery Named for Something Unique

Flytrap Brewing takes its name from one of Wilmington’s most genuinely unique natural neighbors — the Venus flytrap, the famous carnivorous plant whose only native habitat in the world is within roughly a 60-mile radius of Wilmington. It’s the kind of name that says everything about the brewery’s identity. Local. Distinctive. Rooted in a sense of place you can’t find anywhere else.

That identity runs through everything Flytrap does. The brewery opened in October 2014 in the Brooklyn Arts District, deliberately chosen for its tight-knit, neighborhood feel. The taproom doubles as a kind of community living room — a regular spot for artists, musicians, brewers, chefs, and the most serious beer fans of the lower Cape Fear, all sharing the same space.

The Beer

Flytrap specializes in American and Belgian-style ales, brewed in small batches on equipment designed for freshness over volume. The lineup is built around six core beers, supplemented by an ever-rotating cast of seasonals and special releases — so even regulars find something new to try most visits. The brewery has built a particularly strong reputation for its Belgian-style brews, but the variety means there’s almost always something on tap that fits whatever you walked in for.

The bartenders are knowledgeable and happy to walk you through the menu if you’re not sure where to start — and flights are always a good way to sample your way through.

Live Music and Community

Live music is a real part of the Flytrap experience — typically three nights a week, local musicians take over a corner of the taproom for an evening. The brewery is also a regular host of community events and creative collaborations, which is part of what makes it feel like an extension of the neighborhood rather than just a place to grab a beer.

The Space

The taproom is small, cozy, and full of personality. Twinkly lights and tucked-away corners give it a warm, welcoming feel, and you’ll often spot actual Venus flytrap plants growing around the brewery — a clever nod to the name. Step outside and you’ll find an inviting outdoor space that’s a favorite spot to settle in on a nice day, with comfortable seating and a relaxed neighborhood vibe that fits right in with the surrounding Brooklyn Arts District. Food trucks rotate through regularly, so there’s almost always something to eat alongside your beer.

Good to Know

  • Dog-friendly — leashed dogs are welcome in the taproom.
  • Family-friendly atmosphere — kid-friendly, with reviewers regularly noting they bring their families along.
  • Food trucks rotate at the brewery, so there’s typically something to eat alongside your beer.
  • Live music is a regular fixture three nights a week — check ahead if you want to plan around it.
  • Take some home — Flytrap sells 32-ounce crowlers and 4-packs to go, so you can take your favorites home with you.
  • Located at 319 Walnut Street in the Brooklyn Arts District, just a few blocks from the downtown waterfront.

A Wilmington Neighborhood Standout

Flytrap Brewing is the kind of place that earns your loyalty without trying too hard. The beer is genuinely well-crafted, the space is welcoming, and the community-rooted spirit of the place is exactly what you’d hope for from a neighborhood brewery. Whether you’re a serious beer enthusiast or just looking for an easy stop on a downtown Wilmington afternoon, this is one that earns its place on every brewery day in the city.
