Eden, NC offers a compact but rewarding attractions cluster in the northern reaches of Rockingham County — spanning local mill-town history, riverside outdoor recreation, and a genuine piece of mid-century Americana. That mix reflects Eden’s identity as the largest city in Rockingham County, a place built by three textile towns and shaped by the two rivers — the Dan and the Smith — that meet within its bounds.
Eden’s history side is anchored by the Eden Historical Museum, a storefront museum in the uptown district that preserves the story of how the separate mill towns of Leaksville, Spray, and Draper became one city in 1967 — including the world-famous Karastan rug, produced in Eden for nearly a century and displayed here in the museum’s own collection.
The city’s outdoor recreation traces back to its rivers. The Smith River Greenway offers a paved, walkable trail along the water — with painted butterfly art hung in the trees along the route — while the Matrimony Creek Nature Trail follows a roughly one-mile natural-surface path to a waterfall beside the ruins of the old Leaksville Mill, tying Eden’s outdoor present directly to the water-powered industry that built the city.
Rounding out the cluster, the Eden Drive-In remains one of the few operating drive-in movie theaters left in North Carolina — a nostalgic, family-friendly way to catch a first-run film under the stars and a genuine slice of small-town Americana.
