Smith River Greenway

The Smith River Greenway is a paved riverside trail that runs along the Smith River through Eden, NC — an easy, family-friendly walk with a river overlook, public art, and a genuinely pretty stretch of water alongside you the whole way. At about 2.6 miles out-and-back, it’s the longest of Eden’s walking trails and one of the most rewarding for a relaxed hour outdoors.

Wide, flat, and gentle, the greenway works equally well for walking, running, or biking, and it’s a favorite for families thanks to the playful features scattered along the route — most notably the Butterfly Trail, a collection of butterfly art tucked among the trees. An Easy Riverside Walk

The greenway runs from the River Drive trailhead to Kennedy Street beside the YMCA, following the Smith River along a wide, well-graded path of pavement and crushed gravel. It’s an easy route — flat enough for just about anyone, with only a modest change in elevation across its 2.6-mile out-and-back length — and most walkers finish it in well under an hour.

The river is the constant companion. An overlook platform steps out toward the water, giving you a place to pause and take in the Smith, and benches are spaced along the way for a rest. The scenery shifts nicely with the seasons — green and shaded in summer, colorful in fall — which is why it’s worth a visit any time of year. A picnic shelter with restrooms sits along the route, making it easy to turn a walk into a longer outing.

The Butterfly Trail and the Otter Sculpture

The greenway’s signature feature is the Butterfly Trail — not a separate trail at all, but a collection of butterfly art installed right along the greenway. At its fullest, it featured around 70 painted butterflies in small, medium, and large sizes, hung in the trees along the path for walkers to spot as they go. For kids especially, hunting down the butterflies among the branches turns an ordinary walk into a game.

The butterflies aren’t the only art along the way. Keep an eye out for a bronze otter sculpture — part of the Otter Holt and Otter Sculpture project the city created in partnership with the Dan River Basin Association — a nod to the wildlife that actually lives along the Smith, where lucky visitors sometimes spot real otters. The greenway has also featured a sunflower field and pollinator plantings at times, adding seasonal color to the route.

One honest note for planning: the greenway’s art and amenities have seen uneven upkeep in recent years, and some of the butterflies have gone missing or fallen into disrepair, with the sunflower field not always in bloom. It’s still an enjoyable walk with plenty to see, but if you’re coming specifically for all 70 butterflies or a field of sunflowers, temper expectations and treat whatever you find as a bonus on top of a good riverside trail.
