Historic Yates Mill County Park

Located just five miles south of downtown Raleigh, Historic Yates Mill County Park is a 174-acre treasure that beautifully combines nature, history, and tranquility. At its center lies the Historic Yates Mill, the last remaining water-powered gristmill in Wake County, which has been meticulously restored to reflect its 19th-century charm. This operational mill, dating back to the mid-1700s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers guided tours from March to November. Visitors can experience corn-grinding demonstrations and learn about the development of early industries in the Piedmont region.

In addition to the mill, the park boasts four miles of scenic trails for nature lovers, including the easy 1-mile Millpond Trail that encircles a peaceful 24-acre pond fed by Steep Hill Creek. With picnic areas, two boardwalks, and the A.E. Finley Center for Education and Research—featuring exhibits on milling and natural history—the park is a perfect destination for families, history enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers alike.
