North Carolina State Capitol

Located in the vibrant heart of Raleigh, the North Carolina State Capitol stands as a proud symbol of the state’s rich heritage. Raleigh was designated as the state’s permanent capital in 1792, following earlier legislative meetings in cities such as New Bern and Hillsborough. The original State House, built in the late 18th century and renovated in the early 19th century, served as the seat of government until it was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1831. This event led to the construction of the remarkable Capitol we see today, completed in 1840. As a National Historic Landmark, the 1840 Capitol is noted for its grand columns and majestic dome, inviting visitors to explore its historic Senate and House chambers, which are furnished with period décor, through free guided tours. Situated on Union Square amidst serene green spaces, it is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and curious travelers eager to uncover the stories that shaped North Carolina.
