River Club is a laid-back taproom in downtown Madison, NC — a relaxed bar and lounge on Murphy Street pouring a curated selection of draft beers, cider, and wine in the heart of the Madison Social District. Open seven days a week in a beautifully renovated old building, it’s the kind of easygoing small-town spot where you can settle in with a flight, catch up with friends over a few cold ones, and feel right at home. We’ve always found it an amazing spot with a great group of people and a lineup that keeps us coming back.

The space has a notable place in local history, too: it opened as Rockingham County’s very first craft brewery before evolving into the taproom it is today. It’s changed names and hands along the way, but the welcoming, hang-out spirit that made it a Madison favorite has carried right through.

From a Funeral Parlor to a Downtown Taproom

River Club’s story starts with a renovation. In the summer of 2018, David Peters took on an old Madison building — a former funeral parlor that had sat empty for years and was close to being condemned — and transformed it into Rockingham County’s first craft brewery. Opening in October 2019 as Hell on Horsecreek, it brewed its own beer on a small system right behind the bar and quickly became a favorite hangout for locals and visitors alike. The extensive renovation of the long-vacant building was as much a draw as the beer.

That building still anchors the experience today. More recently, the business changed hands and rebranded as River Club, shifting from an on-site brewery into a downtown taproom — new ownership reopening the space under its own character and name. The transition kept what made the place work: as we found on our own visits, despite the changes, it still feels like home.

The Taproom

Today River Club runs as a relaxed downtown taproom, open seven days a week, pouring a curated selection of draft beers — its own label alongside guest taps from breweries around North Carolina and beyond — plus cider and wine by the glass. It’s an easy setup for a mixed group, with something for everyone, whether you’re a hardcore craft-beer drinker or just want a glass of wine.

The vibe is the real draw. It’s a welcoming, streetside spot built for hanging out — the kind of place to grab a drink, settle in, and lose track of an afternoon with good company. Set right in the Madison Social District, it pairs naturally with the distillery, shops, and other spots nearby, making it an easy anchor for an afternoon or evening downtown. And it’s genuinely convenient — only about 20 to 30 minutes from Greensboro.
