Martin Marietta Park – Explorer Trail

The Explorer Trail at Martin Marietta Park in New Bern, North Carolina, is a scenic 2.3-mile path that winds through a former quarry, now transformed into a vibrant natural oasis. This easy, flat trail is perfect for hiking, biking, trail running, and birdwatching, offering stunning views of the park’s largest lake.

Most of the trail is covered in gravel and sand, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers; however, there is a section with a primarily grassy surface that may be quite tall, depending on when it was last mowed. Benches are scattered along the path for rest stops, and the trail is dog-friendly, welcoming leashed pets.

The area features two wooden platforms and an observation area, providing excellent spots for wildlife watching and enjoying views of the lake. Although most of the trail has limited shade (making sunscreen essential on sunny days), it does lead to a picnic shelter and playground that offers some sun protection. The Explorer Trail is separated by the Story Walk Trail, continuing on the opposite side. Additionally, the trail can be combined with the Dragonfly Trail for a longer hike around the park.
