The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame — set on the third floor of the North Carolina Museum of History in downtown Raleigh, NC — is the state’s official showcase of North Carolina’s most notable athletes, coaches, and sports journalists across every major sport. Founded in 1963 by Charlotte visionaries Jack Wood and Lloyd Caudle, the Hall of Fame has since grown to honor over 420 inductees — including household names like Michael Jordan, Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Kay Yow, James Worthy, and Coach K — through interactive displays, sports memorabilia, and a permanent inductees archive.

The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is housed inside the NC Museum of History, which closed in October 2024 for a $200 million, four-year renovation. The Sports Hall of Fame is closed to the public during this period and is scheduled to reopen alongside the museum in a two-phase reopening beginning fall 2028. Over 420 Inductees Across NC’s Sports History

New inductees are honored each spring at the Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony — one of the state’s premier sports celebrations.

The 4,000-Square-Foot Exhibit Space

The Hall of Fame’s current 4,000-square-foot exhibit space opened in 1992 after the NC General Assembly funded a more permanent home inside the NC Museum of History.
