Carolina Beach State Park – Oak Toe Trail

The Oak Toe Trail at Carolina Beach State Park is a short and easy path that splits off from the Sugarloaf Trail, stretching about a quarter mile each way. Even though it’s brief, it’s a nice option for hikers who want to see something different during their visit.

The trail ends at a quiet marsh overlook with views of the Cape Fear River and the nearby brackish marsh. It’s a calm spot to stop, enjoy the scenery, and look for wildlife. Sometimes, you might see large cargo ships heading to or from the Port of Wilmington, which adds an interesting contrast to the peaceful setting.

As you walk, you might notice fiddler crabs moving through the marsh, dwarf palmetto plants beside the trail, and lichens on the oak branches above. These small details show off the variety of life in the park’s coastal ecosystem.

You can easily add the Oak Toe Trail to a longer hike on the Sugarloaf Trail. It’s a short but memorable side trip that lets you experience one of the park’s quieter spots.
