Carolina Beach State Park

Carolina Beach State Park covers 761 acres on Pleasure Island and stands out from the busy boardwalk and beach nearby. Set along the Cape Fear River, the park is known for its variety of ecosystems, scenic trails, and interesting natural history. It’s a popular spot for hikers, paddlers, campers, and anyone who loves nature.

The park is best known as one of the few places where Venus flytraps grow naturally. On the Flytrap Trail, visitors can see these interesting carnivorous plants up close, along with other unusual species like pitcher plants and sundews that live in the park’s wetlands.

Besides its rare plants, the park has several miles of hiking trails that go through longleaf pine forests, coastal wetlands, and old sand dunes. The Sugar Loaf Trail takes you to a 50-foot sand ridge that has been a landmark on the Cape Fear River since the 1700s and was important during the Civil War.

If you enjoy being on the water, the park’s marina gives you access to the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway. There are boat ramps, slips, and easy spots to launch kayaks and paddleboards. You can also camp overnight at tent or RV sites, and the visitor center has exhibits about the park’s natural and cultural history.

Carolina Beach State Park offers a peaceful getaway with its rare ecosystems, outdoor activities, and quiet beauty. It’s a great place to experience the unique landscape that makes this part of the North Carolina coast special.
