Jordan Lake State Recreation Area – New Hope Blue Trail

For one of the most genuinely rewarding moderate hikes at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, the New Hope Blue Trail is a real treasure. Set at the New Hope Overlook Access in New Hill, NC (just south of Apex, NC), this beloved 2.7-mile loop offers a substantially longer outdoor experience than the recreation area’s easier short loops — winding through rolling hills, dense forests, and direct lake views along the Jordan Lake shoreline.

The trail combines moderate terrain, diverse landscapes, and strong wildlife viewing — with particularly rewarding sunrise and sunset light along the open shoreline stretches. Be sure to check out the YouTube video, pictures, and related content below to get a feel for the New Hope Blue Trail before you go — or to relive the visit after.

A Shoreline-Focused 2.7-Mile Loop

The New Hope Blue Trail’s defining character is its direct connection to the Jordan Lake shoreline. Unlike the trails at the Ebenezer Church Access — which sit deeper in the forest interior — the Blue Trail moves between forested interior sections and open shoreline stretches, giving hikers repeated opportunities for overlooks throughout the loop.

The moderate 2.7-mile distance and rolling-hills terrain make this one of the more substantial hikes at the recreation area. The trail is well-marked throughout, moving through dense pine and hardwood forest with clear signage at the transitions between wooded interior and open shoreline sections.

Sunrise, Sunset, and Wildlife on the Water

The direct shoreline access makes the Blue Trail one of the more photographically rewarding hikes anywhere at Jordan Lake. The open lake stretches catch the warming or cooling light at sunrise and sunset in a way the interior trails simply can’t match — a real draw for landscape photographers and casual visitors alike.

The shoreline character also supports strong wildlife viewing. Bald eagles are year-round residents of the lake and particularly visible along the trail’s open sections. Migratory ospreys arrive in March or April and stay through early fall, with peak visibility during the summer breeding season along the open lake stretches. Hikers also regularly spot white-tailed deer through the forested interior, turtles along the shoreline and shallower coves, and songbirds throughout.

The Red Trail Extension

For hikers looking for a more substantial half-day experience, the Blue Trail can be easily combined with the New Hope Red Trail at the same trailhead — for a combined experience of over 5 miles with both open shoreline and forest interior character in a single visit.
