A Trail Built by Volunteers

The Summit Trail is a meaningful piece of work all on its own. Built with more than 6,000 volunteer hours over five and a half years, the trail is a beautifully crafted, well-graded path that winds up the mountain using switchbacks designed to make a serious climb feel manageable. You can feel the care that went into every section — from the careful drainage cuts to the rock work to the layout itself. It’s a real testament to what volunteer-driven conservation work can do, and the trail’s quality is one of the reasons Elk Knob has built such a loyal following.

What to Expect on the Trail

The Summit Trail climbs through a classic high-elevation northern hardwood forest of sugar maple, yellow birch, American beech, and yellow buckeye — a forest type you don’t see much of below 4,000 feet. As you make your way up, keep an eye out for rare wildflowers blooming across the rich amphibolite soils — including Gray’s lily, trailing wolfsbane, large purple fringed orchid, and flame azalea — depending on the season.

About halfway up the trail, you’ll reach a mid-trail vista overlook that rivals the views from the summit itself. It’s a perfect spot to catch your breath, take in the High Country scenery, and decide if you want to push on to the top.

The trail’s roughly 977 feet of elevation gain is significant but well-distributed across the 1.9 miles, with the switchbacks doing real work to keep the climb steady rather than punishing. Most reasonably fit hikers will find it challenging but achievable.

Two Summit Overlooks

The summit of Elk Knob is split into two distinct viewpoints — and they’re both worth your time:

North Summit — looking out toward Mount Rogers (Virginia’s highest peak), Pond Mountain, Three Top Mountain, and across the Virginia state line into the high country to the north.
South Summit — looking out toward Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, Mount Mitchell (the highest peak in the East), and the nearby ski slopes of Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain.

Together, the two overlooks deliver one of the most complete 360-degree views in northwest North Carolina, with named landmarks in just about every direction.
