Tryon Palace – Wilderness Garden

The Wilderness Garden at Tryon Palace in New Bern, North Carolina, offers a beautiful contrast to the formal gardens of the historic site, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the 18th-century coastal landscape. Covering part of the palace’s 16 acres of carefully designed gardens, this area showcases native plants and trees, including wildflowers, shrubs, and woodland species that early European settlers would have encountered.

Designed to reflect the region’s untamed flora, the garden creates a diverse habitat for local wildlife and pollinators, fostering a serene and natural environment. Maintained in the Colonial Revival style by landscape architect Morley Jeffers Williams in the 1950s, the Wilderness Garden serves as a tranquil retreat that blends historical authenticity with ecological richness, inviting visitors to explore a piece of North Carolina’s natural heritage.
