Joymongers Barrel Hall

Joymongers Barrel Hall is the Winston-Salem outpost of Joymongers Brewing — a Greensboro brewery — set in a restored 1920s Spanish Colonial garage in the historic West End neighborhood, across from Hanes Park. It opened on March 8, 2018, and it does something unusual for a taproom: alongside the full Joymongers lineup brewed in Greensboro, the Barrel Hall is a dedicated barrel-aging facility, one of the few breweries in the country to give barrel-aged production its own separate taproom.

The 6,000-square-foot space seats over 200 at a 50-foot bar and communal tables, all built by local artisans, with massive garage doors that open onto West End Boulevard on warm days. The rotating draft list runs 17-plus beers — IPAs, pales, lagers, stouts, and sours from Greensboro, plus the bourbon- and wine-barrel-aged beers made on site, many available only in Winston-Salem.

From a Greensboro Brewery to a West End Barrel Hall

Joymongers Brewing started in 2016 at 576 North Eugene Street in Greensboro, founded by co-owners Mike Rollinson (the head brewer), Jim Jones, and Brian Jones. The Greensboro taproom built a reputation on sheer variety — within its first two years, Joymongers had brewed an estimated 83 different beers, a number that climbs past 200 counting all its post-brewing infusions.

The Triad’s response was strong enough that the founders looked to expand, and they chose Winston-Salem for its mix of industrial past and active present. Renovation of an old 1920s garage in the West End began in October 2017, and the Barrel Hall opened March 8, 2018. The reconstruction kept the building’s Spanish Colonial character — restored architectural details, new skylights, and the big garage doors that merge the taproom with the street in good weather.

The Barrel Hall accomplished two things at once. It expanded Joymongers’ footprint in the Triad, and it created a separate home for the brewery’s growing barrel-aging program — using fresh bourbon and wine barrels to age beers that a standard production taproom wouldn’t have the room to produce. For a brewery already known for variety, the Barrel Hall gave it the space to make even more.

Worth noting: Joymongers in Winston-Salem operates on a 100% retail basis — you won’t find their beer in cans at the grocery store or in wholesale distribution. To drink it, you come to the taproom.

The Beer and the Room

The draft list is the appeal. On any visit, the 17-plus rotating taps include Joymongers’ Greensboro-brewed core — IPAs, pale ales, lagers, stouts, and sours — alongside the barrel-aged beers produced on site in bourbon and wine barrels, chalked up on tablets above the bar with their ABVs. Many of the Winston-Salem beers are exclusive to this location and change constantly, so the list rarely looks the same twice.

For anyone who isn’t a beer drinker, the Barrel Hall also pours liquor and cocktails, wine, hard cider, and Delta 9 seltzers, which makes it an easy group stop where not everyone wants a pint.

The room itself is built for a crowd. The 6,000-square-foot space seats over 200 at a 50-foot bar plus tables and benches, with TVs that give it a sports-bar energy during games and an airy, industrial feel the rest of the time. It’s family friendly by day and cutting-edge at night, with live music, trivia, and bingo on the calendar and rotating food trucks handling the food, since there’s no kitchen on site.

A Winston-Salem Highlight

Most taprooms age a few barrels in a back corner if they do it at all. Joymongers built a whole taproom around it. The Barrel Hall is one of the few breweries in the country to give its barrel-aging program a dedicated home, which means the list here includes bourbon- and wine-barrel-aged beers you won’t find at the Greensboro original — or anywhere else, since Joymongers sells retail-only and doesn’t distribute.

The building is worth the trip on its own. A 1920s Spanish Colonial garage in the West End, restored with its architectural details intact and fitted with garage doors that open the 6,000-square-foot room onto the street. Across from Hanes Park, seating more than 200 at a 50-foot bar, it manages to be family friendly in the afternoon and a proper night out after dark.

Come for the barrel-aged list, which is the reason this place exists and the thing you can’t get elsewhere.
