Carolina Beach State Park – Flytrap Trail

The Flytrap Trail at Carolina Beach State Park is a short and easy 0.5-mile loop that gives visitors a close look at one of North Carolina’s most unique ecosystems. The trail is wheelchair-accessible and passes through pocosin wetlands, longleaf pine forests, and wiregrass savannas. With both natural surfaces and wooden boardwalks, it is gentle and welcoming for everyone.

This trail is the most popular and accessible way to see the park’s carnivorous plants. Park rangers often use it for guided walks and educational programs, especially in the busy summer months.

The main attraction is seeing the rare Venus flytrap growing in its native habitat along the edges of the pocosins. These small, carnivorous plants can be hard to spot, so visitors should look carefully and always stay on the trail to protect them. You might also see other carnivorous plants like pitcher plants and sundews, as well as seasonal wildflowers.

Venus flytraps are most active and easiest to find during their growing season, which lasts from late spring through early fall. Their white flowers usually bloom in May and June. In winter, the plants are dormant and much harder to see.

Venus flytraps are protected by state law in North Carolina. Poaching them is a felony, so it is especially important to stay on the trail and leave the plants undisturbed.

The trail starts and ends at the parking area at the end of Nature Trail Lane. It offers a quick and rewarding hike for nature lovers, families, and anyone interested in the park’s biodiversity. You can also reach it from where the Sugarloaf Trail and Swamp Trail meet, so it is easy to add to a longer hike.

The small parking lot at the trailhead often fills up quickly on busy weekends. Arriving early is the best way to get easy access.
