Beaufort Historic Site – Josiah Bell House

Located in the heart of Beaufort’s historic district in North Carolina, the Josiah Bell House, built around 1825, is a captivating testament to the town’s rich history. This beautifully restored Victorian home is part of the Beaufort Historic Site and was once the residence of the influential Bell family. Among them was Josiah Fisher Bell, a Confederate spy known for his daring exploits, including an attempt to blow up the Cape Lookout lighthouse during the Civil War, which adds an intriguing layer to the house’s history. Stepping inside, visitors are transported to the mid-19th century, where rooms showcase an eclectic mix of Victorian and Art Nouveau design, enhanced by period furnishings that bring the era to life. The house is situated on a charming two-acre site, providing insight into the complex Civil War loyalties of coastal Carolina—40% of Beaufort’s residents supported the Union, making Bell’s story even more fascinating. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply appreciate a good story, the Josiah Bell House, with its elegant architecture and tales of espionage, is a must-visit gem that vividly brings Beaufort’s seafaring past to life.
