Located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, the City of Raleigh Museum, often referred to as the COR Museum, is a hidden gem that brings the vibrant history of North Carolina’s capital to life. Located in the historic 1874 Briggs Hardware Building, this museum captures the essence of Raleigh’s past through engaging exhibits such as “Planting Power: 100 Years of the Raleigh Garden Club” and “Diamond Days: The History of Baseball in Raleigh.” With a mission to “preserve Raleigh’s past for the future,” the museum offers free admission and provides a cozy, intimate space that is perfect for history buffs and curious visitors alike. From interactive displays on local democracy to artifacts showcasing the city’s evolution, the COR Museum invites you to explore the story of the “City of Oaks.” Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit here is a delightful way to connect with Raleigh’s roots. Additionally, the gift shop features unique local treasures that make for perfect souvenirs. We also found the exhibits on the North Carolina State Capitol helpful in understanding its history (even after visiting the State Capitol historic site), which includes a piece of the original George Washington statue destroyed in the 1831 fire.
