Tucked away at the Beaufort Historic Site, the Carteret County Jail, also known as “The Old Jail,” constructed in 1829, is a striking piece of North Carolina history. Its robust 28-inch-thick walls once confined prisoners until 1954 and bore witness to a single hanging in 1874. Relocated to Turner Street in 1977 and carefully restored by 2022, the jail now serves as a captivating attraction. Visitors are drawn to its eerie cells and the surprisingly cozy jailer’s quarters, which offer a glimpse into the stark contrasts of its past. Thanks to the Beaufort Historical Association’s dedication, this historic gem continues to share its haunting stories and coastal Carolina heritage with all who visit.
