Harkers Island Visitor Center

Located at the eastern tip of Harkers Island, North Carolina, the Harkers Island Visitor Center serves as an inviting gateway to the wonders of Cape Lookout National Seashore. This welcoming hub encourages visitors to explore the area’s rich maritime history and vibrant ecology through engaging exhibits, interactive maps, and a kid-friendly Discovery Room filled with hands-on activities, such as animal sound games and touch tables. Knowledgeable rangers are always available to share insights, provide park brochures, and direct you to the nearby ferry ticket booth for a scenic ride to Cape Lookout Lighthouse and Shackleford Banks, where you can see wild horses roaming freely. The center includes restrooms, a well-stocked gift shop featuring local souvenirs, and a peaceful picnic area overlooking Core Sound—making it the perfect place to plan your adventure or relax after a day of exploring. Additionally, there are two hiking trails accessible from the visitor center that are definitely worth exploring. The visitor center is also within walking distance of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, which is also a great place to visit.
