Shackleford Banks

Shackleford Banks, a pristine barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, is a hidden gem within the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Stretching nine miles along the Crystal Coast, this uninhabited island is renowned for its untouched beaches, rolling dunes, and maritime forests. It’s home to a population of over 100 wild Banker horses, descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs, which roam freely and captivate visitors. Accessible only by boat or ferry from nearby Harkers Island or Beaufort, Shackleford Banks offers a serene escape for shelling, birdwatching, fishing, and camping. Guests can also venture across the shores via ferry to visit Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Its remote nature and rich ecosystem, including salt marshes and tidal flats, make it a haven for wildlife and a must-visit for those seeking an authentic coastal adventure.
