Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden is a 7-acre public botanical garden located in the historic downtown of Kernersville, NC — genuinely singular in NC as the only public botanical garden between Raleigh and Charlotte. Paul J. Ciener’s Vision — From Kernersville Businessman to Public Garden Founder

Paul J. Ciener was one of Kernersville’s most active 20th-century businessmen and civic figures. The grandson of a Hungarian immigrant, Paul brought his family’s entrepreneurial spirit to Kernersville when he purchased the Grubbs Ford dealership in 1975 and renamed it Ciener-Woods Ford. He went on to establish Piedmont Carolina Nursery in the 1980s on land behind his family’s Colfax home and started PCI Builders, a construction company, in the 1990s.

Alongside his business ventures, Paul was a lifelong gardener with a genuine passion for horticulture. He dreamed of giving Kernersville a public garden that would serve as a source of community pride, environmental education, and horticultural enjoyment for area residents and visitors. Before his death in 1998, he laid out his vision for what would eventually become the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden.

After Paul’s passing, his two sons, Greg and David Ciener, carried the vision forward. Formal planning began in 2001, with the Welcome Center, Horticulture Center, and initial garden spaces completed and opened to the public in 2011.
