Mount Jefferson State Natural Area

Mount Jefferson is named after Thomas Jefferson and his father, who owned and surveyed the land nearby. The Mount Jefferson State Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1974. Even prior to the National Natural Landmark designation, the local citizens were already trying to preserve the natural wonders of Mount Jefferson by donating land and money to have it be considered for State Park status, and in 1956 it received that status.

Mount Jefferson features over 700 plants and incredible views of nearby mountain peaks in North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. This is one of the few parks where most of the great views are accessible by car. If you are an adventurer, there are still trails that you can hike from the bottom to the top. There are also trails at the top of the Mountain that lead to Luther Rock, which provide some additional amazing views. We love Mount Jefferson and highly recommend it as a great day trip destination.
