Beaufort Historic Site

The Beaufort Historic Site, located in the heart of Beaufort, North Carolina, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich maritime history of this charming seaport village. As the third oldest town in the state, founded in 1709, the historic site spans two acres and features ten meticulously restored buildings. Among them is the Russell House, built in 1732, which is home to the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery. Also notable is the Carteret County Courthouse, constructed in 1796, recognized as the oldest wood-framed courthouse in North Carolina. Visitors can explore the rustic Leffers Cottage, dating back to 1778 and filled with Colonial artifacts, or venture into the Old Jail, known for its 28-inch-thick walls and spooky ghost stories. Managed by the Beaufort Historical Association, the site also includes the Old Burying Ground, where graves from the 1710s tell stories of pirates, patriots, and star-crossed lovers. Whether you choose to hop on the vintage 1967 English double-decker bus for a narrated tour or take a leisurely stroll through the colonial gardens, the Beaufort Historic Site immerses you in centuries of coastal Carolina history, blending architectural beauty with intriguing tales of adventure. For a memorable experience, don’t miss seasonal events like the Old Homes and Gardens Tour or the spooky evening ghost walk.
