Nestled in the heart of Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in West Jefferson, North Carolina, the Summit Trail offers hikers a rewarding and accessible ascent to the peak of Mount Jefferson, standing at approximately 4,683 feet, although we do want to note that the views of the surrounding landscape will be better from the other overlooks or Luther Rock.
This short 0.3-mile trail is rated moderately difficult and has a gentle gravel surface. It starts right at the summit picnic area parking lot, where you’ll find restrooms, pavilions, and tables. The path winds through a lush forest filled with northern red oaks, mountain laurel, and rhododendron.
This trail is great for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a quick outing in the park’s National Natural Landmark, which is home to over 700 plant species. You’ll reach the summit marker next to a National Weather Service station, and if you want panoramic views, you can continue on nearby trails like the Rhododendron Trail to Luther Rock.
