Kaleideum is Winston-Salem’s flagship experiential learning museum — a substantial five-story, 73,600-square-foot family destination in downtown Winston-Salem, NC that welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors annually. Formed through the July 2016 merger of the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks, Kaleideum consolidated both institutions into a single $48 million downtown facility that opened to the public on February 17, 2024.

The museum’s name is genuinely thoughtful — inspired by the ever-changing, colorful patterns of a kaleidoscope, symbolizing wonder, curiosity, and self-directed learning. Kaleideum’s programming combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) through seven hands-on exhibit galleries, including Wonders of Water, the By Design studio, the Digital Dome planetarium, and the Rooftop Adventure playground with woven climbing structures and downtown Winston-Salem skyline views.

The 2016 Merger of Children’s Museum and SciWorks

Kaleideum’s origin story reaches back to 1964, when the Junior League of Winston-Salem founded the Nature Science Center — originally located on the grounds of the Reynolda Estate. The Nature Science Center moved to a larger campus in 1972 and reopened in 1992 after a major renovation as SciWorks — Winston-Salem’s flagship science museum for decades.

Meanwhile, in November 2004, the Junior League opened a second museum — the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem at 390 South Liberty Street — as a gift to the city celebrating the league’s 75th anniversary. The Children’s Museum focused on literature-based experiential learning and became one of Winston-Salem’s most popular family destinations across its two decades of operation.

Discussions between the two museums’ leadership began in 2015, and on July 1, 2016, the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks formally merged into Kaleideum. For the next seven years, Kaleideum operated a dual-campus model — Kaleideum Downtown at the former Children’s Museum site and Kaleideum North at the former SciWorks campus — while Forsyth County leaders and community funders worked to build a new consolidated downtown facility.

The $48 Million February 2024 Downtown Grand Opening

Both original Kaleideum campuses closed in December 2023, and the new consolidated downtown facility opened to the public on February 17, 2024. The $48 million building at 120 West 3rd Street consolidated the substantial programming of both predecessor institutions into a single genuinely substantial family destination — five stories and 73,600 square feet in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem.

The consolidation genuinely transformed Kaleideum’s operational footprint. Rather than requiring families to visit two separate campuses for the full experience, the downtown facility combined the play-based learning of the Children’s Museum with the STEAM programming of SciWorks into a single visit. The new building’s design combines interactive exhibit galleries, dedicated maker spaces, planetarium programming, and outdoor playground amenities across five stories with rooftop access.

Kaleideum draws approximately 200,000 visitors annually — making it one of the most-visited attractions anywhere in Winston-Salem and one of the largest children’s museums in the Southeast.
