Cascades Preserve – Headwaters Trail

Located just outside Kernersville and Oak Ridge, the Headwaters Trail at Cascades Preserve is a hidden gem for nature lovers seeking a peaceful escape in the heart of North Carolina’s Triad. This easy 2.2-mile out-and-back trail, part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, meanders along the serene Haw River, providing a gentle hike with minimal elevation gain, making it suitable for all skill levels.

As you walk through lush woodlands and past swampy wetlands, keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer and a variety of vibrant songbirds that enhance the experience. The trail has a tranquil atmosphere, although you may encounter some muddy patches and spider webs, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and use bug spray.

If you wish to extend your hike beyond the preserve, there is a small gravel parking lot on Linville Road that offers easy access to the trail. Alternatively, the best way to reach the Headwaters Trail within the preserve is by hiking a portion of the Falling Waters Trail from the dedicated parking lot off Goodwill Church Road. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself sharing the path with only the sounds of nature, especially on quieter days.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing walk or hoping to spot unique wildlife, the Headwaters Trail provides a refreshing dose of natural beauty. For those seeking an extra adventure, be sure to take the Falling Waters Trail down to the cascades, especially after a decent amount of rainfall.
